Sound insulation 'helps reduce' East Midlands Airport noise

16/04/2010 09:49:36

Local homeowners are being offered grants to install sound insulation.

Sound insulation grants may have been behind a significant drop in complaints lodged by residents living close to East Midlands Airport.

Statistics from Castle Donington airport revealed a 59 per cent fall in the number of people voicing their displeasure with noise from the facility, when compared with last year, the Leicester Mercury reports.

The airport was fined £22,000 in 2008-09 for breaking noise regulations, with some of the money going towards double-glazing sound insulation for locals.

According to the figures, 1,064 grievances were aired between April 1st 2009 and the end of last month, while 2,632 objections were received in the preceding year.

'We take control of noise very seriously, imposing wide-ranging controls, such as penalty schemes and preferential flight paths,' a spokeswoman for the airline said.

More than five million individuals use the service each year and the representative added the operator was pleased a reduction in noise from planes had occurred, adding that this is the third year in a row that this has happened.
