Sound insulation call for Southampton homes

22/12/2009 11:58:26

Sound insulation is on the Christmas lists of thousands of Southampton residents.

Sound insulation could help improve the lives of 12,000 Hampshire residents, Southampton Airport has been told.

Environmental and local community activists want the airport to pay for sound insulation work on thousands of properties.

The pressure comes amid growing concern about the impact of aircraft noise on the health and general wellbeing of people living nearby.

Most airports in the UK have a grant scheme to help property owners pay for sound insulation upgrades.

This work could include the fitting of acoustic windows or sound absorption coating for walls or ceilings.

A spokesman for Southampton Airport told the Daily Echo, a local newspaper, that noise levels did not breach government safety standards.

He added that if that changed, the airport would look at introducing a sound insulation grant scheme.
