Sandwell College, West Bromwich

Architect: Bond Bryan

Location: West Bromwich

The modern, sweeping façade of the £77 million development of Sandwell College’s new Central Campus includes a range of high performance architectural glass from Solaglas.

The Saint-Gobain Group company worked with architects Bond Bryan to create a specification that met the safety, acoustic, solar control and thermal insulation requirements of the new 25,300m2 multi-storey college and sixth form.

The campus is in the heart of West Bromwich town centre and will become home to 10,000 students from across the West Midlands.  It will serve as a catalyst for regenerating the local area, where a bus and Metro station have already been built and further retail and leisure facilities are planned.

Ian Grainger, UK Architectural Sales Manager for Solaglas’ Architectural Division, said: “We worked very closely with the architects from the start to ensure that their vision would become a reality.  The key issues were the safety of the students in relation to compliance with Document K of the Building Regulations and the well being of the occupants with regard to the solar heat gain and thermal insulation of the building to create a comfortable learning environment for the students throughout the year.

“The specification of SGG COOL-LITE SKN174 II high-performance solar-control glazing with its neutral appearance is designed to minimise energy consumption, allowing the building to be kept cool in the summer, whilst minimising heat loss during the winter – without discolouring or tinting the glass.

“In addition, due to the building’s proximity to the railway line and the inclusion of a music room within the college, it was important that acoustic glass SGG STADIP SILENCE was specified in some parts of the structure.”

Laurence McBeth, Sales and Commercial Director at Alumet Systems, which fabricated the curtain walling system, said “Solaglas worked hard to assist the Alumet Group throughout the construction process to provide a fantastic glass façade which integrates perfectly, both functionally and aesthetically within our overall envelope package. Everyone concerned should be very proud of the part they have played in delivering this superb building.”
