M.R. Swistherm transforms The Plymouth Grove Estate, Manchester
A major housing refurbishment scheme has seen parts of Plymouth Grove in Manchester transformed by M.R. Swistherm External Wall Insulation and Silicone Render Systems.
The refurbishment programme will run for three years and forms part of the first PFI pathfinder social housing contract in the UK.
Key partners involved include Harvest Housing Group, Gleeson Group plc and Nationwide Building Society - in partnership with Manchester City Council.
The large scale and exciting Ardwick PFI project involves the demolition of 436 homes, the refurbishment of 663 existing council owned homes, new infrastructure and landscaping, as well as the construction of over 600 new homes for sale, a village centre and shops. The scheme is designed to bring a bright future to the area. The whole area is being re-modelled to provide a pleasant and safe environment for residents.
An important part of the housing stock upgrade was to install external wall insulation to the homes to bring thermal insulation performance up to current standards. This particular method of energy efficient wall insulation, supplied by Alumasc, is technically the best solution. By placing the highly effective insulation layer on the outer wall, the existing structure is completely protected inside the Swistherm system thus eliminating condensation and cold bridging problems.
The Ardwick project places great emphasis on the look and feel of the whole area. So it is also a great benefit to the project that the homes have been aesthetically enhanced by the highly durable M.R. ST Silicone Render, applied over the insulation in colours selected by the tenants. The render provides excellent weather resistance combined with vapour permeability thus once again providing the optimum technical solution.Alumasc were specified due to the excellence of both their product and service. In terms of product, the BBA-backed life performance of the system used extends to 30 years. Alumasc’s triple-thrust service package covering full technical specification support, long-term warranties and an approved contractor system come together to provide an exceptional level of quality and future assurance to the client.
