Big projects 'will drive construction resurgence'

Big projects 'will drive construction resurgence'Britain's construction industry is set to recover as an increasing number of large-scale infrastructure projects continue to ramp up demand for workers.

This is according to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation's (REC's) building division, which highlighted nationwide initiatives including the Olympic Games.

Similarly, the Crossrail high-speed train network is also progressing, with lucrative tunnel and station contracts having gone up for tender in recent weeks.

Simon Noakes, chair of REC Construction, said it is important the government invests in the sector now to ensure the country avoids a potential skills shortage in the future.

'The construction industry is coming out of the recent recession severely injured, but looking at a promising year ahead,' he stated, adding that training and development opportunities for younger workers could prove invaluable.

In November, the Office for National Statistics showed the total volume of construction output for the third quarter of 2010 jumped by four per cent, when compared with the previous three-month period.
