Wooden windows and doors 'CO2t less'
04/06/2010 15:32:13
The new Wood Windows CO2t Less initiative from the Wood Window Alliance highlights the potential environmental advantages of wooden windows and doors in terms of reduced carbon emissions.
According to the organisation, fitting a property with wooden windows and doors can save 0.75 tonnes of carbon compared with using PVC-U frames throughout.
This is equivalent to driving 6,500 km in a standard-sized family car, the industry body adds, one of the statistics that inspired its creation of an eight-minute movie highlighting the ecological benefits of wooden frames.
However, it is not only CO2 emissions that feature in the campaign - the alliance also says that wooden windows last longer than PVC-U equivalents.
Chair of the alliance Sean Parnaby says: 'We are very excited to have been able to produce a new film which is all about offering architects and specifiers the information they need to make an informed decision.'
The benefits of both materials can be combined by draught-proofing wooden windows and doors using a PVC seal along any draughty edges, in line with recommendations from the Energy Saving Trust.
