Bristol grants could help community green and sustainable building projects

A new grants initiative in Bristol could help community groups to cover the cost of green and sustainable building projects.

Sums of between £1,000 and more than £10,000 can be allocated as part of the newly created Bristol Green Capital Community Challenge Fund.

Projects could incorporate anything from green and sustainable building to recycling, self-sufficient food schemes, walking buses and energy-saving efforts.

Council leader Barbara Janke says that the authority recognised a need 'to help local projects get off the ground and give people the chance to reach new audiences, increase the quality of life in their neighbourhood and cut their carbon emissions'.

Applications should be easy to make, as the process is specifically designed to encourage interested parties to put forward their ideas.

The initial funding for the first year of the project stands at £75,000.

Bristol City Council's sustainability portal explains that the authority is working towards an environment that meets citizens' needs in the immediate term without putting people elsewhere or in the future at risk.
