Freedom of flooring materials 'thanks to fire'
07/05/2010 16:31:02
While fire may be the worst nightmare of many homeowners, one developer has revealed that a property that had been gutted by a blaze allowed him to use his own choice of flooring materials.
Patrick Michell, an architect who bought a three-bedroom house in Hackney, tells the Guardian that the home had two rooms damaged by fire, while bailiffs had removed period features before he purchased it.
But far from being a tragedy, this allowed Mr Michell to choose his own design scheme and make use of modern flooring materials.
He laid concrete throughout the interior and straight out on to the patio area, blurring the boundary between the inside and outside of his new home.
Large expanses of glass at the side and rear of the property add to this effect, removing the fixed division that a brick wall might represent.
On its completion, the property earned the title of Overall Winner of the Don't Move, Improve! award from New London Architecture.
