Boiler scrappage scheme 'a great success'

Plumbers and suppliers have received a much-needed boost through the government's boiler scrappage scheme, Lord Hunt has stated.
The energy and climate change minister noted the initiative has been "a great success" and is already helping homeowners to save money on their power bills.
Individuals taking advantage of the venture were able to claim back £400 for the cost of installing an A-rated boiler or other sustainable improvements to a property.
Lord Hunt said it had also helped "to sustain work for the 130,000 installers and up to 25 UK-based boiler manufacturers throughout the economic recovery".
While applications for the discount are now closed, a number of energy suppliers are continuing with their own promotional offers, with some allowing customers to get up to £800 off the price of a new heating system.
Last month, Andrew Leech of the National Home Improvement Council urged the government to provide more financial support for UK residents, adding that even with the scheme a boiler is a significant investment.
