Ground source heat pumps need energy efficient homes

Ground source heat pumps can be a great way for homeowners to save money and improve their environmental credentials.
However, green home experts have warned that money invested in ground source heat pumps will be wasted if homeowners ignore energy efficiency.
As well as ground source heat pumps, homeowners can also install rooftop solar panels, wind turbines and biomass boilers to generate more of their energy from green sources.
"It would be madness to spend a lot of money on a ground source heat pump or a biomass boiler if at the same time you have got single glazing and you are losing heat out of the property," said Matthew Goodwin, director of Eco Energi, which installs sustainable energy solutions.
He added: "People are more and more interested in renewable heating, particularly with the Renewable Heat Incentive that is due to come in next year.
"Obviously it saves money on people's energy bills, but also the government is going to pay them for that heat as well, so what was a good investment is now an excellent investment."
The Renewable Heat Incentive or 'feed-in tariffs' will be introduced next month. It will enable homeowners to sell energy generated from renewable sources back to the national grid.
