Doors and windows offer green way to save money

Doors and windows offer green way to save moneyDoors and windows will play an important role in efforts to cut household energy bills and carbon emissions.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, an industry group, the average British household could save up to £135 a year by investing in properly insulated windows.

Draft-proofing patio doors and other external doors could save an additional £25 on lower heating bills.

As well as saving money, better-insulated doors and windows can also help save the planet, as 27 per cent of CO2 emissions come from residential properties.

The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) has said much of the effort to tackle emissions must come from modifying existing properties.

"The majority of homes that will be standing in 2050 have already been built, so we need radical cuts in energy use and carbon emissions from this sector if we’re to meet our climate change goals," the UKGBC said.

Doors and windows are an obvious place to start for homeowners looking to improve the energy efficiency of their homes.

They may also wish to upgrade to a modern, more efficient boiler or invest in wall and loft insulation.
