HBF: Housebuilding targets must be met

HBF: Housebuilding targets must be metThe government needs to ensure housebuilding targets are met in order to strengthen the UK construction industry.

This is according to the Home Builders Federation (HBF), which told the Press Association that more than 216,000 jobs could be created over the next 20 years if 232,000 properties are built each year.

Such a move could benefit firms operating in the windows, doors and bathroom fittings industries, with executive chairman of the HBF Stewart Baseley describing it as a 'win-win' situation.

Earlier this month, figures from the institution showed more than 2.7 million people are still living at home with their mums and dads because of a shortage in available housing.

'Not only will families get the homes they need but local employment and increased investment will be boosted both by the housebuilding industry and by government,' Mr Baseley explained.

However, the organisation admitted this will require more funding from the authorities to the tune of £1.2 billion per year or more.
