Solar-power windows and doors technology 'moving forward'
24/11/2010 15:08:49
Glass windows and doors that are able to generate solar power yet maintain a transparent surface could be one step closer to the market.
A prototype product by New Energy Technologies is being pushed for commercialisation following successful research and trials.
Treated with a specific coating, the windows can be given energy-generating properties without the need for the high-temperature and high-vacuum production processes that are currently used, the organisation claimed.
It reported the glass remains see-through and is able to produce power in both natural and artificial light environments, noting that in the latter conditions it is up to ten times better in low-intensity irradiance surroundings than existing thin film-options.
At a recent debut of the technology, the company's scientists were able to show that it generates the voltage and current necessary to power lighting and mechanical appliances.
This followed similar research into solar-power producing building materials, with experts at Swansea University recently announcing they are making headway in manufacturing steel cladding materials that are able to perform this function.
