Manufacturers of windows and doors 'must declare U-value for full surface'

The upcoming changes to Part L Building Regulations put new demands on manufacturers of windows and doors to assess the U-value of their products based on their full surface.

Due to come into effect in October, the regulations mean that the U-value of windows and doors - which assesses their energy loss or gain - can no longer be based on the centre of the glazed area.

Instead, calculations must incorporate the casement in addition to the glass, as set out in Approved Document L1A from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.

The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) is preparing for the change by providing a low-cost U-value calculation service to its members.

By using the service, manufacturers receive a U-value capable of satisfying the demands of the Building Regulations.

The BWF adds that having U-values in place can help to make products appeal to architects and specifiers - who may otherwise look to competitors who can offer thermal transmittance ratings.
