Closing the loop with recycled windows and doors

Recycled windows and doors are allowing green and sustainable building operators to close the loop and reduce their impact on the environment.

Closed-loop recycling refers to products which can themselves be recycled to create new products of the same type.

The British Plastics Federation notes that a number of manufacturers of windows and doors are moving towards this model of manufacture.

In some cases the loop is not yet entirely closed, but instead old PVC units have been turned into vinyl recyclate, which was later manufactured back into new window units by a different company.

However, some manufacturers have closed the loop by offering 100 per cent recycled window frames.

The observations come as Vinyl 2010, the voluntary commitment put forward by the European PVC industry, is published.

In its commitment, the industry's members jointly pledge to recycle more materials after use, as well as to set ambitious targets for the sustainable use of raw materials.
