Green Party proposals could ensure flooring materials are legal

Proposals put forward by the Green Party could help to reduce the risk of flooring materials been sourced illegally in the years to come.
According to Green Party MEP Caroline Lucas - recently elected as MP for Brighton Pavilion, the first time the party has won a seat in the House of Commons - up to two-fifths of the world's timber produced is through illegal logging.
Of this, a fifth enters the EU and could find its way into doors, windows and flooring materials made of wood.
However, Green Party recommendations submitted to the European Parliament Environment Committee are now being considered in a second reading.
Ms Lucas says: 'Strong support came from across the political spectrum on key issues including adoption of an overriding prohibition on placing or making available illegally harvested timber on the EU market.'
She adds that the steps taken could involve setting criminal penalties for illegal logging and importing illegal timber, along with minimum sanctions for any such activities.
