Car park upgrade delay over friezes

A multi-storey car park in Blackpool is having a £6 million refurbishment delayed because councillors want its art deco friezes preserved.
The council's planning committee was recommended to agree a complete upgrade of the building on Talbot Road. Councillors deferred the application and urged developers Muse to try to preserve decorative tiling which has lain beneath cladding since the 1960s.
Muse's plans to re-clad the building with vertical glass strip panels are aimed at making the car park look modern. It would have 653 parking spaces and six retail units at ground level with refurbishment around the original concrete frame.
Talbot Road car park, built in the 1930s, was one of the first multi-storey car parks in the country. Damage to part of the tiling led to cladding over the friezes.
