UK urged to ditch baths for showers

15/06/2011 10:26:56

The Government is urging people to take a shower rather than enjoy a soak in the bath in a bid to save water after drought conditions were declared in some areas of the UK.

Calling on everyone to play their part, Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman said the change would help reduce the impact on agriculture and wildlife which has suffered amid the lack or rain falling across Britain during spring.

The call was backed by manufacturer Mira Showers, which highlighted research which has found that showers are far more economical than baths in terms of water usage.

Roger Crabb, marketing manager of Mira Showers, said: "According to the Environment Agency, a five-minute shower uses about a third of the water of a bath - and can save 50 litres every time."

While many may prefer to spend quality time relaxing in the bath, Ms Spelman said households should be using water "more wisely" in the bathroom, with the shower option one way in which families can help the environment.
