Boiler scrappage helps 55,000 homeowners
04/03/2010 13:55:31

Close to 55,000 people have taken advantage of the government's boiler scrappage scheme, according to government figures.
The initiative is designed to encourage people with old, inefficient boilers to trade them in for newer, more efficient boilers.
The move is intended to help people struggling to afford to upgrade their boilers. Under the scrappage scheme, discounts of £400 are available to help cover the costs.
While the idea has been broadly welcomed, there has been some criticism, with detractors noting that even with a £400 voucher, a new boiler is still a significant investment.
Also, while a total of 54,758 vouchers have been issued, 125,000 were made available.
The government remains confident not only that boiler scrappage is helping the right people, but also that all the vouchers will be allocated by the end of the scheme.
Newer, more efficient boilers can help to reduce energy bills and cut emissions from residential property.
