New boilers could power green homes
03/03/2010 13:57:24

New boilers are set to be unveiled in Britain today, which are capable of generating heat and power at the same time.
The boilers are gas-powered like traditional domestic boilers, but can produce electricity as well as heat.
Baxi, the manufacturer, claims the micro combined heat and power (micro CHP) boilers could play an important role in the green homes of the future.
"This is the next evolution of the gas boiler, allowing you to generate electricity along with heat," Mark Kelly, Baxi's chief executive, told the Guardian newspaper during an interview.
"It will reduce carbon emissions and ultimately will also insure homes against power cuts. And unlike most lower-carbon technologies, it can be installed in a day."
Baxi claims that homeowners who install these new boilers could save between £350 and £400 per year.
This comes ahead of the launch of the government's feed-in tariff scheme. From April 1st, homeowners will be able to sell electricity generated from renewable sources back to the national grid and earn up to £900 per year.
