Poor insulation costs £500m

05/03/2010 17:27:14

Poor insulation cost British homeowners £500 million last year, according to the government.

British homes could have saved £500 million last year if their homes had been better insulated.

Government figures released this morning show the massive costs of energy waste as a result of poor insulation or building design.

The 2009 figures were inflated by the especially cold winter, which means January and February of this year are also likely to have been expensive months.

The data emerged as the government steps up its efforts to improve the energy efficiency of Britain's residential property.

Earlier this week, Ed Miliband, the climate change secretary, announced plans to introduce home improvement loans to help pay for cavity wall insulation, loft insulation and other green initiatives.

The hope is that by 2020, insulation will be fitted in all British homes where it is feasible to do so.

The government also wants seven million homes to have invested in more sophisticated green initiatives such as rooftop solar panels and wind turbines.
