Feed-in tariffs to create 300 green jobs

04/02/2010 17:21:21

The feed-in tariffs confirmed this week will lead to the creation of 300 new jobs.

Feed-in tariffs that allow homeowners and businesses to sell electricity generated from renewable sources will create 300 new jobs.

That was the claim this week from eaga, the outsourcing company hired by the government to run the scheme.

Feed-in tariffs are designed to encourage the installation of solar panels and other sources of renewable energy in homes and businesses.

Once installed, the electricity generated from these renewable sources can be sold back to the National Grid for up to £900 a year.

John Swinney, director of strategy and corporate services at eaga, said that as well as earning money for homes and businesses, the scheme would also create new jobs, boosting Britain's green economy.

"This innovative development can be offered right across the UK," he said. "We expect thousands of households to benefit in the first few years and up to 300 additional green energy jobs could be created as part of this programme."

The feed-in tariffs are expected to lead to a spike in demand for solar panels, rooftop wind turbines and other micro-generation equipment.
