Sustainability wins out in LSE design competition

O'Donnell & Tuomey has come out on top in the competition to design new student facilities at the LSE.<br/><br/>

Dublin-based practice O'Donnell & Tuomey has secured the contract for the design of a new students' centre on the London School of Economics' (LSE's) Aldwych campus.

The firm was praised for the submission of a proposal that surpassed its competitors in achieving the highest standards of sustainability, while also meeting other criteria such as providing a source of inspiration and innovation for students.

Julian Robinson, director of planning and development at the LSE, said that the exemplary design would help the institution achieve its ambition of establishing a world class estate.

"The approach of O'Donnell & Tuomey was sensitive, erudite and engaging. The narrative was very strong, which was reinforced by an excellent presentation," he added.

Other shortlisted practices involved included David Chipperfield, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris and Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios.

The Royal Institute of British Architects has also recently unveiled Topotek 1 as the preferred designer for an extension of the Imperial War Museum North in Salford Quays.
