Timber flooring materials 'to be included' in EU due diligence legislation

New European legislation to reduce illegal logging in timber production will include flooring materials, it has been confirmed.
The Timber Trade Federation notes the publication of the legislative resolution reached by the European Parliament on July 7th.
In the full wording of the agreement, the types of timber product due to fall under the new regulations are outlined.
Among them are flooring materials, including individual wooden tiles for use in parquet flooring.
Unassembled parquet flooring friezes and strips fall under the classification code 4409, the document states.
Alongside them are other common wood-based flooring products such as tongue and groove timber.
Sheets intended for veneering and of a thickness no greater than 6 mm fall under classification code 4408.
Plywood is also covered by the regulations, along with non-flooring applications of timber such as barrels, packaging and railway sleepers.
The legislation aims to place a due diligence requirement on importers to ensure that the wood products they buy from overseas were felled in accordance with the laws of their country of origin.
