Flooring companies are beginning to see a modest upturn in fortunes as the ravages of the recession begin to wear off.

While the UK is still showing only very small signs of growth, some flooring companies are upbeat about the medium-term outlook.

James Halstead, for example, which is a leading manufacturer of commercial flooring, said this week that trading profit and turnover were continuing to grow despite tough trading conditions.

The group has committed to £4 million of capital expenditure to upgrade plant and equipment over the coming months, increasing capacity and productivity.

A number of flooring companies have struggled during the economic downturn, as companies have put off refits and homeowners have delayed plans to redecorate their homes.

With the UK officially out of recession, the sector will be hoping to see an upturn in both of these markets.

One factor that might boost residential sales is the sluggish housing market. With fewer people moving, homeowners are more likely to spend money on their existing properties in a bid to boost value for when the market picks up again.
