Home improvements 'require professionals'

01/07/2009 15:54:23

It is important that professional tradespeople are employed to carry out major home improvements, the NHIC has claimed.

Homeowners planning major refurbishment should avoid the risk of a DIY mishap and potentially heavy repair costs by calling in a professional tradesperson, the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) has advised.

The group's comments came in response to a study carried out by Saga which showed that ten per cent of over-50s have carried out major home improvement tasks themselves.

Group director Andrew Leech warned that while smaller jobs can be tackled singlehandedly, work involving roofing, plumbing, electrical installations and structural amendments should always be carried out by professionals.

"If you were employing a person and he was a creditable person who belongs to a recognised organisation then he would have his own insurance and he would also be backed up by his association," he explained.

Further research from Sainsbury's Home Insurance carried out in April showed that 65 per cent of the adult population have taken on property renovations in the last 12 months.
