Drainage materials can help in flood-risk areas

10/06/2010 10:28:05

Minimising flood impact can be a matter of specifying the right drainage materials.

Specifying the right drainage materials can help to minimise the impact of flooding by ensuring water is not able to enter the property through its wastewater outlets.

The Environment Agency is working with 29 homes and businesses in the Kent village of Lamberhurst to help improve their resilience against floods.

Its guidance on how to do this includes a variety of different techniques, including the use of drainage materials that only allow water to flow out of the property.

Non-return valves on all drains can prevent unwanted water from entering through the drainage system, the agency notes.

Similar methods can prevent water from entering through other places where the interior and exterior of the home are linked.

For example, air bricks that provide ventilation for the property can temporarily be covered, plugging the holes in their surface so that water cannot enter.

On a larger scale, door guards perform the same function for the entrances to the home.
