Sustainable drainage at the heart of UK Coal scheme
26/01/2010 16:39:23

Sustainable drainage is at the heart of an £800 million regeneration scheme by UK Coal.
An £800 million regeneration scheme by UK Coal in partnership with BNP Paribas Real Estate will showcase green and sustainable building techniques.
The development in Waverley, South Yorkshire has been given the green light by Rotherham Council.
Drainage was a particular concern for the development, with the threat of surface water flooding now prevalent in all major construction projects.
The built environment plays an important role when it comes to limiting the threat of surface water flooding. As a result, it has become a key measure of any new project's sustainability credentials.
"We have worked with UK Coal to create a masterplan for a truly pioneering development and we are delighted with Rotherham Borough Council's decision," John Dunshea, director of Sheffield planning at BNP Paribas Real Estate, told Property Week.
"Sustainability has been a main focus of the scheme since its inception over 15 years ago and environmental issues including air quality, drainage and transport have all been addressed."
Heavy rain that overwhelms drainage systems has been responsible for some of the worst flooding in recent years.
In many parts of Britain, surface water flooding represents a more significant risk than the bursting of banks by rivers or lakes.
