Land drainage under pressure as snow thaws

18/01/2010 10:33:36

Land drainage in parts of Britain was under pressure this weekend as snow and ice melted.

Land drainage systems had a tough weekend after the recent snow and ice thawed.

While the rise in temperatures will be largely welcomed after the disruption of recent weeks, it also brings the threat of surface water flooding.

The Environment Agency was warning ahead of the weekend that blocked drains posed a risk in areas where thawing snow and ice was adding to the volume of surface water.

"People should be aware that there is a risk of some localised surface water flooding from overwhelmed drainage systems," a spokesman said.

Land drainage plays an important role in flood defences for residential and commercial property.

Soakaways and culverts provide a natural means of drainage, avoiding large build-ups of surface water.

Surface water is a significant threat during periods of unusually heavy rain. During the floods of 2007, it was surface water overwhelming the drainage system rather than rivers breaking their banks that caused most of the damage.
