Polypipe weighs up SUDS options

29/06/2009 17:03:38

Polypipe has touted the benefits of below-ground SUDS solutions for landscapers and developers.

Hard below-ground sustainable drainage systems (SUDS) can offer landscapers and developers more space and flexibility when chosen over above-ground systems, Polypipe claims.

Dr Jason Shingleton, marketing and development director at Polypipe Water Management Solutions, has explained that while soft above-ground SUDS such as reed beds, balancing ponds and swales are an attractive option in promoting biodiversity, below-ground systems are popular because they allow developers to pack more features into a small development.

"For example, where an above-ground balancing pond would deliver a water feature for a new housing development, the same area could be used as landscaped gardens or recreational space," he stated.

Dr Shingleton went on to state that where possible, a holistic combination of both forms of SUDS allows developers to establish a water management system that is both aesthetically pleasing and resilient to freak weather conditions.

Polypipe has recently launched the Rainstream rainwater harvesting solution to assist developers in meeting BREEAM requirements.
