Windows scrappage to boost energy efficiency?
07/01/2010 11:22:28

Windows could get their own government-sponsored scrappage scheme if a petition organised by a trade association is successful.
The Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) is lobbying the government to introduce a scrappage scheme for new windows similar to the boiler initiative announced last month.
Under the boiler scrappage scheme, homeowners can get a discount on a new, more efficient boiler if they trade in their old, less efficient boiler.
The GGF wants ministers to introduce the same deal for windows. Under its proposals, if a homeowner upgrades to new, energy efficient windows they would get a grant of around £1,000 from the government.
The trade association has set up a petition through the government's e-petition scheme and it is promoting the idea on its website.
It hopes the idea will catch on, with the boiler scrappage initiative still making the news and energy efficiency a big issue for homeowners.
Replacing old, poorly fitted windows with professionally installed uPVC windows can reduce heat loss, benefiting the environment and helping homeowners to save money on their energy bills.
