Cladding materials need more than a 'dot and dab' approach to fixing them in place, the Tile Association has warned its members and end-users.

The trade body explains that many householders fitting cladding materials comprising individual wall tiles will use dots of adhesive in the corners and a dab in the centre of each one.

However, it adds that hiring a professional to affix the tiles to the wall could allow their full potential to be realised without the risk of shortening the life span of the finished surface.

'Your home is your biggest financial asset; don't risk it,' householders are told by the association.

'Tiles fixed correctly will last a lifetime with little or no maintenance and will add real value to your property.'

Industry training is available to help professional fixers do a good job, with the Tile Association noting that coaching covers not only wall tiles, but also issues relating to the fixture of floor tiles.
