Olympic Stadium reaches full height

09/03/2010 13:57:11

The Olympic Stadium, the centrepiece of the 2012 Games, has now reached full height.

An important milestone was reached this week in the construction of the Olympic Stadium.

The new arena, which will form the centrepiece of the 2012 London Games, has now reached full height.

A huge crane has lifted 28-metre lighting towers into place on the roof of the stadium.

These lighting towers will enable television companies covering the Games to beam high-definition images into the homes of viewers.

"The lifting of the lighting towers is a significant engineering and construction challenge and has taken a huge amount of work and planning, complicated by the snow, wind and rain," said John Armitt, chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA).

"Once all 14 towers have been lifted the venue will be another huge step closer to completion."

Progress on the different venues required to host the Olympics is on schedule. Earlier this month, the ODA announced that cladding work on the broadcast and media centre had been completed.

The cladding will give the facility a distinctive look, while also performing practical functions such as improving insulation and protecting the structure from the elements.
