Water damage claims spike
09/02/2010 10:35:09

Homes and businesses have faced a greater risk of flood damage from burst pipes during the recent cold snap.
Insurance companies have reported a sharp rise in claims, as extreme temperatures have led to higher incidence of frozen pipes.
Overall, insurers have received 16,000 weather-related claims from residential customers since the cold snap took hold in December.
"There have certainly been more home insurance claims linked to water damage in recent weeks than we'd expect to see when the weather is milder," said Ben Tyte of Sainsbury's Insurance.
"We experienced a similar surge during last year's cold snap, but this year it has been much more prolonged and intense."
Residential and commercial property faces a much greater risk of water damage during cold snaps, as freezing temperatures can lead to burst water pipes and flooding.
In residential properties, bathroom suites and kitchens are particularly at risk, especially if homeowners are going away for long periods.
There are various measures that can reduce the risk of frozen pipes, such as leaving the hot water on for a short period each day even if the property is not being used.
Insurers also note that residential and commercial customers need to check their level of cover, to make sure they will be reimbursed for any damage that does occur.
