Toilets and showers set for new guidance
21/12/2009 15:12:48

Specifications for toilets and showers in new residential properties are out to consultation.
The government published 'Sustainable new homes the road to zero carbon' this week, which includes revised criteria following technical advisory group discussions.
In dwellings with three or more bedrooms, the revised guidance dictates that space beside the toilet must extend back 250mm from the front edge of the toilet bowl.
Rather than require full transfer space, developers will now only need to provide "adaptation potential" to increase the depth to 700mm "if and when required".
The height band for potential fixing of grab rails for toilets has been extended from between 300mm and 1500mm to between 300mm and 1800mm.
The consultation is aimed at tightening up guidance on new developments to limit the impact of residential property on the environment.
Ministers are also keen to make property more resilient to flood risk, by ensuring minimum drainage levels.
