Bathroom suites could potentially be at risk from burst pipes as temperatures plummet across Britain.

Homeowners, who have invested in new showers and bathroom accessories this year, are being urged to carry out a health check on their pipes this winter, to avoid any nasty surprises.

Burst pipes can cause thousands of pounds worth of damage and lead to otherwise unnecessary insurance claims.

With all the pipe work for sinks, showers and baths, bathroom suites are particularly at risk if homes experience plumbing problems.

As well as frozen pipes, homes are often exposed during the Christmas period as people take holidays and short breaks.

If leaks go undetected while they are away, the damage can be much more serious.

"Water damage claims tend to peak during the first two weeks of January and this could be as owners return to their premises following the festive break," said Paul Redington of home insurance provider Aviva.

"However, losses don't just occur during the Christmas break. Any long period of closure can mean water damage can escalate where the leak remains undetected."

Homeowners can avoid returning from time away to an expensive leak by turning off their water supply before they leave or programming the heating to come on for a short time each day.
