Britain's baths and showers will all be policed by water meters in the next ten years – that's if the recommendations of an independent review into water pricing are taken up.

Ann Walker, chair of the Office of the Rail Regulator, was asked to look into pricing in the water industry and said water meters would help encourage water conservation.

At the moment, only around one-third of homes have water meters. For the remainder, water bills are calculated based on the size and value of the property.

Ms Walker said people who did not have a water meter had no incentive to use less water and that there was strong evidence to suggest that water meters led to less waste.

A dramatic increase in the number of water meters could see more people giving some thought to the number of baths they take each week and how long they leave the shower running.

It is also likely to boost spending on more efficient bathroom accessories.

With modern appliances, water bills for large, expensive properties with only one or two people living in them could fall considerably if a water meter was installed.
