Construction product sales volumes are continuing to fall despite improved prospects for recovery elsewhere in the economy, the Construction Products Association (CPA) has announced.

The group's activity barometer, measured in conjunction with Ernst & Young, has delivered a zero for the very first time.

It explained that a figure of 50 represents stagnant year-on-year growth, with any number lower than this indicating a decline in sales volumes.

The CPA warned that the figure was evidence of the parlous condition of the UK construction industry.

"Manufacturers are just as pessimistic for the coming months, returning figures of just three for heavy side manufacturers and ten for light side, as they expect further falls in sales over the next quarter," lamented Noble Francis, economics director for the group.

Last month, the CPA warned that the government will hinder prospects for short and long-term economic recovery if it cuts back on capital investment in the built environment after the next election.
