NHIC joins call for VAT cut on renovations

The National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) is lending its weight to the campaign to reduce VAT on home renovation projects to five per cent.
In comments made this week, the group's director Andrew Leech backed the Federation of Master Builders in promoting the initiative, claiming that it will give a kickstart to an industry that has been knocked off-kilter by the rapid decline in renovation projects.
He added that the UK government should look to the rest of Europe's lead in implementing the VAT reduction policy, as many other continental countries have already enacted a cut.
"There are already reductions on things that are energy efficient, like boilers, but the reduction in VAT is something which the NHIC has been lobbying for about 15 years," Mr Leech added.
According to recent research carried out by the Federation of Small Businesses, 59 per cent of its members have experienced a drop in trade in the last six months.
