Britons told 'turn off your taps'
31/12/2008 15:27:41

Low-flow taps and showerheads could be in greater demand in the coming months as the Guardian reports on a water shortage impacting the east of England.
According to the publication, areas in the east reaching north as far as the Humber estuary are experiencing a worse water shortage than arid climates such as Morocco.
In a new report from the Environment Agency, the Guardian notes that usage per person is an area of focus.
While the government aims for individuals to use 130 litres of water each per day, the nationwide average is 148 litres.
And, in the south-east, this reaches up to individual water usage of 170 litres per person per day.
Low-flow taps and showerheads could be just one way of helping to lower the consumption of water by households during renovation projects.
Such fixtures and fittings are among the recommended ways of saving water by the Environment Agency.
Others include dual-flush toilets - allowing for a smaller amount of water to be used if sufficient.
Leak detection devices are also recommended to ensure no water is being lost due to weaknesses in pipes or other systems.
