Care home invests in drainage materials

A West Sussex care home is investing in new drainage materials after being fined for allowing dangerous levels of pollutants to discharge into the River Arun.
The Clemsford House Care Home at Broadbridge Heath near Horsham had been granted permission to discharge water from its sewage treatment works.
Permitted levels of pollutants were set at 45 mg of suspended solids per litre and 25 mg per litre of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD).
However, in February of this year, measurements showed discharge of 122 mg per litre of BOD and 70.2 mg per litre of suspended solids.
The care home has now brought online a new treatment plant, investing £180,000 in equipment and drainage materials to ensure that it does not exceed the levels again.
Southern Water has also been fined for polluting the River Arun after a blockage in the main sewer near the A259 Rustington bypass led to sewage discharge into a stream on a nearby business park.
