Sound insulation materials 'help with peace and quiet'

30/04/2010 16:42:54

Insulation can help lower interior noise problems, it has been claimedSound insulation materials are a good way of ensuring rooms can be protected from interior noise sources.

This is the suggestion of Cheryl West, specialist in the sector for Owens Corning, who told EMC Lifestyle that sound insulation materials are 'engineered specifically' for this purpose.

'Many homeowners don't realise the noise control benefits that come with adequate insulation,' she remarked. 'Insulation products ... can help significantly reduce the unwanted noise echoing throughout a house.'

According to Ms West, common complaints include loud televisions in other parts of the property and screaming children.

Acoustic batts between the interior walls are a good place to start, she explained, with the bathrooms, bedrooms, kitchens and laundry areas all recommended for this kind of upgrade.

New green and sustainable building requirements in Scotland have been introduced that could see residences in the country benefiting from better sound insulation.

Infrastructure minister Stewart Stevenson said the standards will ensure individuals and families can escape from 'unwanted noise'.
