Simple green and sustainable building tips 'can save money'
02/09/2010 16:24:58
A selection of simple green and sustainable building ideas have been offered by Michael Holmes, spokesman for the National Home Improvement Show.
He explains that there are a number of steps to take to improve a property's energy profile, as well as the amount of water that it consumes.
Some of his suggestions are common green and sustainable building ideas, such as fitting a condensing boiler, double or secondary glazing and energy-efficient light bulbs.
However, he also notes the possibilities presented by other improvements, including under-door insulation to keep out draughts.
Insulating a boiler can have the same energy impact as a one-degree drop on the thermostat, he adds.
'Buy a jacket for your boiler; it will save ten per cent on your energy bill,' Mr Holmes advises.
He also recommends ensuring that taps do not leak, to save a potential 5,000 litres of wasted water each year, along with using a displacement device to reduce the fluid used by the toilet in each flush.
