DIY green roof 'has multiple benefits'

05/11/2008 14:56:21

A do-it-yourself (DIY) green roof put in place by one Burley Lodge resident has a number of benefits for her property, she tells Woodhouse Today.

Vik Banks explains that the grass on her eco-friendly roof does not need to be mowed, but may help to prolong the structure's lifespan.

She tells the publication: "I had the idea for a green house some years ago after picking up a leaflet at an organic fair."

But she adds that, at the time, she could not afford to undertake a DIY sustainable roof project.

Now, with the help of her local council, she has been given a grant to supplement her own spending on the grass roof.

"It is fair to say that it has made a big difference - it's certainly been a talking point," she asserts.

Sustainable roofing research organisation The Green Roof Centre explains that coverings typically comprise layers of waterproofing, protection and drainage, on top of which a substrate coating and plant life is put in place.ADNFCR-1903-ID-18860405-ADNFCR
